Deane St Heritage Shaft Preservation

Technical Services (TS) manage the public health and safety risks associated with historic mine shafts, trenches and dumps in Charters Towers. At present, 1,160 actual and potential shaft sites have been catalogued within the Charters Towers city limits area. These sites are being managed in cooperation with the Charters Towers Regional Council (CTRC) in order to:

  • make the abandoned shafts safe to reduce the risk to people and animals
  • inform the public about where the abandoned shafts lie (for example for land development purposes).

TS is undertaking a Small Scale Works Program (SSWP) to make safe abandoned mine features across the state. In Charters Towers, the SSWP is aiming to add to the existing shaft repair program by maintaining tourism and heritage values where possible. TS is working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure that the works completed will align with the Councils Towers Hill Master Plan.  The objective of the plan is to ‘help our community prosper, increase visitor attraction, celebrate its historical significance and enable more active and passive land uses’. Features subject to the SSWP include those that are near new developments proposed by the CTRC, in particular, a shared (bike/pedestrian) path.
