Queensland Government acting through Department of Transport and Main Roads requires service of a Coastal Engineering Consultant to study the feasibility of constructing a breakwater at Whisper Bay Cannonvale VMR Boat Ramp in order to give some protection from the oncoming waves during the boat launching and retrieving operation.

Altmann Avenue boat ramp at Whisper Bay Cannonvale (commonly known as the VMR boat ramp) was constructed in 2000 is owned and managed by the WRC. It is the only boat ramp in the area which has sufficient number of trailer parking spaces and therefore is very popular among the boating community. The recent boom in the mining industry in the region also added additional demand for boating facilities. However, due to its exposed orientation to the open sea, launching and retrieving a boat from the sea is extremely difficult at times due to the high wave energy penetration in to the ramp access. The situation is aggravated due to the dredged canal approaching the ramp. A FW was constructed by the council to assist in boat launching and retrieving but was destroyed by the storms. Therefore the boat ramp is experiencing significant downtime due to bad weather despite the boat launching facilities are very much in demand in the region.
