Roma Street Station - Heritage Building Stabilisation

The old Roma Street Railway Station Building was erected in 1874 and has been continuously used as a railway station for over 120 years. It is the oldest station building in Brisbane and “is the earliest surviving major station in any capital city in Australia”. (Conservation Management Plan, Buchanan Architects, 2004, Revised 2007).

The building was listed on the Heritage Register on 28 May 1999 as a Category 1 site of State Heritage significance (highest), and as such the future management, including modifications or refurbishments will be subject to the provisions of the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.

Over time, there has been a large amount of damage to the interior of the building, as well as structural damage caused by wet and dry rot, mainly due to the declining status of the roofing components.

This project addresses the most urgent safety and heritage issues of the building, and includes works such as upgrading the roof and roof structure, installing fire detection systems, and basic maintenance to windows. These items form the base of the Scope of Works.
