Thangool Weir Decommissioning

Thangool Weir is owned by the Queensland Government and managed by the Department of Energy and Water Supply (DEWS), Queensland. RoadTek is employed under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to undertake the day-to-day operation and management of the weir. The weir is a single row, cascade sheet pile construction with a height of 2.1m and full supply level (FSL) of 30ML. The weir was originally built as an aquifer recharge weir, however due to silt build up it is no longer providing much benefit.

The plan is to decommission the weir due to the lack of benefit provided as aquifer recharge weir. This has been discussed with local landholders, bore hole owners, councils and government agencies. The weir has a significant silt and sediment issue which is also leading to weed infestation and causing the weir to be inadequate for its original purpose. As the Thangool and Kariboe Weirs are close together, during the decommissioning, some of the rock material removed from Thangool is proposed to be used in the repairs of the Kariboe Weir.
