Queensland's Perspecitives on Climate Change, Response and Message Framing

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND
Following the Paris UN Climate Conference, and established climate change targets and agreements, the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) is working to shape climate approach and policy in Queensland.  While there has been a considerable body of research focused on gauging public response to climate change threats and impacts, no research exists on the Queensland public’s appetite and expectations of climate change policy at a federal, state or local government level, industry or otherwise since the Paris UN Climate Conference.  Moreover, there is a specific need to understand the role that local issues and impacts play in individual’s understandings and expectations with respect to Queensland focused climate change adaptation and mitigation actions.

The purpose of this research is to establish this baseline understanding in order to gauge expectations as the department progresses the development of climate change discussion papers, adaptation and mitigation strategies and policies, and stakeholder engagement, and to assist in informing policy.

OBJECTIVES
• Develop a baseline understanding of the Queensland community’s appetite and expectation for climate change action

• Investigate the community’s expectations for climate change action at federal and/or state government level, industry, self or other

• Identify key messages for the Queensland public in relation to climate change action
