A Report into the Potential Environmental Impacts of Residual Mine Voids in Floodplains

The department seeks a response and quote to be provided for a research and literature report that addresses the following:

  • Part 1. A distillation and collation from available literature of the potential impacts to environmental values (EVs) caused by residual mine voids remaining in floodplains post mine life.
  • Part 2. With reference to Part 1 of the report, a summary of the additional considerations and factors relevant to the potential impacts of residual voids on relevant EV’s - and a summary of potential impacts relating to: coal mines; coal mines in Central Queensland; coal mines in the Bowen Basin; and, where possible - coal mines in the Fitzroy Catchment.
  • Part 3. An interjurisdictional (national and international) summary of the regulatory approaches and rehabilitation requirements relating to residual mining voids on floodplains. With reference to Parts 1 and 2, a summary of relevant recommendations distilled from available literature.
  • Part 4. Identification of any discrepancies between existing Environmental Impact Statements for coal mines within the Fitzroy Basin and other published studies detailing the potential impacts of residual voids on EVs and impact mitigation strategies- especially those relating to water contaminant loads.
  • Part 5. An estimate of the costs associated with void backfilling and associated void rehabilitation.
