Building Consultancy for David Fleay Wildlife Park - Cafe Deck Expansion

The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing require a Building Consultancy to undertake work for the David Fleay Wildlife Park. The project involves the expansion of the existing deck, complete with roof and upgrading of the interface between the café and the deck.  It is envisaged that the deck expansion will be used for typical café operations (tea, coffee and light meals) and events such as small weddings.

The existing deck is 9.9m long and 1.9m wide and is accessed by a single sliding door on the eastern end.  The deck can currently accommodate 16 patrons. 

The objectives of the project are to:
• expand the existing deck to complement the existing café facilities;
• accommodate approximately 70 additional people (seated);
• moderrnise the interface between the existing café and deck by providing larger and improved access with no change in level (e.g. the existing sliding glass door lip should be removed);
• the deck should be roofed and preferably insulated to provide weather protection;
• the deck should include lighting;
• the balustrading should have a low visual impact;
• the deck should be compatible with the existing landscaped environment;
• the footprint of the project should take into consideration the pedestrian pathways at ground level;
• the ground level and under the deck should be landscaped appropriately with native or endemic vegetation from the site and include an automated irrigation system;
• the design and colour scheme of the project should complement the surrounding buildings;
• the deck has an expected service life of 25 to 50 years;
• minimize ongoing maintenance and operation costs;
• the project must be able to be constructed while maintaining the café operations, inside the building; and
• the project should de designed to provide for possible disabled access in the future, which may include a ramp to facilitate disabled access to other parts of the site.
