Whitehaven Day Use Area Reveg updgrade

The primary aim of this project is the provision of revegetation works at Southern Whitehaven Beach.
The popular site including its day-use and camping areas were severely damaged during TC Debbie, March 2017. Up to 30m of beachfront, including the foredune and its vegetation was lost, and many canopy trees were destroyed. To help restore the site, a revegetation plan has been developed to re-establish pioneer species and encourage natural succession as well as restore sub canopy and canopy species to provide shade.
The significant recovery of site vegetation has meant that Reveg Zone A is refined from the Master Plan to the disturbed areas of ‘bare sand’ where no natural recovery has been evident. Please refer to revegetation plan for detail.
Revegetation plantings are to be installed as per the attached Revegetation Plan and details below.
Plant stock has been sourced by QPWS to meet strict provenance and bio-security requirements.
Phase 1 plant stock will be transported to the site Monday 17 September 2018. Stock will be stored in a shaded area close to water supply.
The following species and quantities will require planting in the main reveg area (currently mulched and fenced):
Spinifex sericus x 400
Corymbia tesselaris x 100 – protect from salt/air spray
Casuarina equisetifolia x 250 – to be planted in clumps of 3, 5 or 7
Cupaniopsis anacardiodes x 100
Euroschinus falcartus x 90
Hibiscus tiliaceus x 250 – to be planted in dips/swails
Sophora tomentosa x 200
The following species and quantities will require planting in the northern reveg area (to be fenced – no mulch):
Spinifex sericus x 400
Ipomoea pes-caprae x 100
Phase 2 plant stock will be available from approximately March 2019. Stock will be transferred to the site and stored in a shaded area close to water supply.
The following species and quantities will require planting in the day-use picnic area as well within the main reveg area, both areas will have formal fencing prior to this phase (installed in November 2018 as part of the sites redevelopment project).
Euroshinus falcatus x 10
Acacia crassicarpa x 300
Sterculia quadrifida x 100
