| In January 2018 Gympie STP sustained significant damage from several lightning strikes resulting in multiple instrument failures. During this time the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was required to be run in manual which caused multiple issues and resulted in unplanned staff overtime. A reoccurrence of running the STP in manual without critical instruments is considered unacceptable.
As part of the replacement work an audit report for lightning and surge protection upgrades was completed, which found deficiencies in the existing systems and identified risk of the damage reoccurring. Council requires an experienced industrial electrician/SCADA & PLC technician to install both Surge Protection Devices and Lightning Protection Systems as recommended in the site audit report.
