The Department of Environment and Science (DES), through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), requires the supply and installation of an automatic number plate recognition system (ANPRS) as currently the rangers are responsible for checking permits throughout their national parks. The public are required to purchase a vehicle and camping permit within Recreational Areas Management (RAM) boundaries at Bribie Island and Cooloola parks.
Apart from this manual process being very labour intensive, with many illegal entries slipping through, there is also a large safety impact on rangers from violent visitors.
This has led QPWS to investigate options to automate this process with the aim to increase revenue and increase ranger safety through the use of ANPRS technology at all unsecured entry and exit points, to capture vehicles entering and exiting sites.
This system is required to provide a detailed log of vehicles onsite to compare against vehicles who have obtained a permit and is to have search functionality across extended time periods and multiple cameras.
