Development of Relocation Strategy of Flying Fox, Lissner Park, Charters Towers

The Queensland Government is seeking Proposals for Development of Relocation Strategy of Flying Fox, Lissner Park, Charters Towers.

Little Red Flying Foxes (LRFF) are a migratory species that take up residence in Lissner Park, Charters Towers, in varying numbers on a semi-regular basis.  During December 2017, approximately 200,000 LRFF temporarily encamped in Lissner Park and the areas immediately adjacent.  This included residential streets, a public swimming pool and a nearby school, as well as other parkland in the area. The influxes have been linked to mass flowering events of native vegetation in the vicinity.  These influxes have occurred historically, and it is expected that they will continue to occur from time to time.

Lissner Park is also home to a small colony of black flying-foxes around 1000 to 5000 strong, which typically remains resident within a small area of the park year round.  Additionally, many of the trees present in Lissner Park are Heritage listed and are significantly valued by the community.  This will limit any management activity resulting in the removal or modification of the trees.

Flying-foxes and their management in Lissner Park, Charters Towers, is a contentious and long running issue.  As described in section 2, this contract has two main components – the culmination of which will result in the relocation of all flying foxes to a suitable* alternative roost site.

The timeframe for the active dispersal attempts have been identified by CSIRO during a small window with April/May 2020 being the target period. The exact date to begin the active management phase may be fluid within this window pending environmental variables and flying-fox numbers within Lissner Park. Ongoing roost management from the supplier is expected to continue until 30 June 2020.

A pre-determined alternative roost site, identified by the Charters Towers Flying-Fox Advisory Committee will be modified in such a way as to make it more appealing as a roost site.

The final stages of this work will involve collaborating with Charters Towers Regional Council (CTRC) staff to continue any management activity as required after June 2020.
