Species Management Program

The Department of Natural Resources Mines and Energy (DNRME), Technical Services team manages the Abandoned Mine Lands Program (AMLP) across Queensland. One of the sites within this program is the former Collingwood Tin mine, located near Rossville in far north Queensland.

To support the ongoing rehabilitation of the site, permanent blocking of the opening to the underground mine workings (portal) needs to occur. By blocking the portal in accordance with a specified engineering design, access by humans to the decline and underground mine workings will be prevented whilst allowing for access to the mine workings by protected fauna species, in particular several bat species.

The Project site has been previously identified to provide roosting habitat for several species of bat, including Rhinolophus robertsi (greater large-eared horseshoe bat) which is listed as endangered under Schedule 2 of the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulation 2006 (Qld).

Under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992, for any proposed activity that will impact on breeding places of protected animals that are classified as extinct in the wild, endangered, vulnerable, near threatened (EVNT), special least concern (SLC), colonial breeder or least concern, a SMP for that species will be required. In addition to being listed as endangered, the greater large-eared horseshoe bat is also identified as a colonial breeder (recognising that this species nest and breed in close proximity as a group, often sharing communal behaviours for the benefit of the entire group).

The Supplier will develop both the documentation to support the submission of the SMP and the SMP document itself. The submission of the SMP to the Department of Environment and Science (DES) will be undertaken by the Customer.

The Supplier may be required to provide general advice in support of the submission of the SMP. This is expected to be in the form of advisory phone calls and possibly emails correspondence.
