Bitumen Liner

The Baal Gammon copper mine, located 8km west of Herberton, is classified as an Abandoned Mine and is subsequently being managed by the Technical Services team within the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME). Authorisation to carry out care and maintenance and rehabilitation activities is provided to DNRME Authorised Officers through provision of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 Section 344A.

A major risk associated with the site is the management of contaminated water, which exists due to acid rock drainage. To control this risk, a durable and waterproof liner is required across the PAF waste rock dumps to prevent rainfall runoff from interacting with the underlying waste rock.
