A key deliverable under the Public Health Approach Strategic Pillar of the Gambling Harm Minimisation Plan for Queensland 2021-25 (GHMP) is a revised Queensland Gambling Help model that is client focused and tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals and communities.
The GHMP identifies youth as a key at-risk group, with youth gambling participation and exposure to gambling-like activities via digital technologies on the rise. The GHMP also recognises higher rates of problem gambling among this cohort compared to the general population and that gambling problems may be set by 20 years of age.
The government-funded Gambling Help services already deliver community education in schools. However, the materials currently used varies considerably between providers. An external review of the Gambling Help Service System identified that the materials were not reaching certain cohorts, including young people. The review also identified a gap in targeting the intersection between online gaming and gambling.
There is a risk that gambling and gambling harms would become more prevalent amongst young people if corrective action is not taken to improve the education delivered to this key cohort.
