Section 1

Tender Overview

Ports North (PN) is responsible for the development and management of port facilities vital to the development of Cairns and regional centres in Far North Queensland. The Corporation has extensive property, marina, tourism and cargo facilities in Cairns and its regional ports.

The approach bridge to the southern end of Wharf 7 and 8 is a steel structure that was repurposed in circa 1994 from a historical roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) port facility. The original ro-ro structure was constructed in circa 1982. The approach bridge is approximately 32m in length and 9m wide, supported on 5 steel piles and a landside concrete abutment.

The primary intention of this contract is to rehabilitate the approach structure to enable it to provide the necessary level of service for a further period of 10-15 years. In order to achieve this it is necessary to reinstate lost steel section and rehabilitate the protective coatings to the structure. It is also necessary to replace the trafficable decking surface.

The scope of work includes:

  • Blasting and painting of steel piles and steel structural elements in-situ (2 main beams, 8 transverse beams and a main headstock)
  • Removal of steel elements for blasting and painting off site followed by reinstatement on site (multiple members, primarily 360UB sections)
  • Installation of a trafficable wearing surface, 3 options to be priced
  • Provision of compensation plates to severly corroded steel members
  • General steel plate replacement where necessary
  • Other associated works as necessary to rehabiltate the structure, as documented in the tender document.

The tender includes the ability to price Composite Fibre Technology (CFT)  decking and CFT replacement of steel member options.

PN requests Tender Submissions from suitably qualified and available Contractors with appropriate experience in the application of high quality marine paint systems for the provision of these works. Works are within an operational port environment and include the provision of appropriate access and environmental controls in the tidal zone.
