Section 1

Tender Overview

The Queensland Government through the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is seeking expressions of interest for Large Green Shiny Mungbeans M19259 under the National Mungbean Improvement Program.

M19259 mungbean will become the variety of choice in a projected high disease pressure season and/or regions more prone to halo blight infection.

To have a seed size equal to Jade-AU with almost Opal-AU level halo blight resistance is a remarkable achievement and a long-term ambition of NMIP to produce genuine large green shiny halo blight resistant varieties. Seed size evenness is a key virtue of this variety and M19259 will find a strong adaptation for central NSW and should considerably grow the industry in this region.

The mungbean line M19259 meets the strategic intent of the National Mungbean Improvement Program (NMIP) to deliver varieties that are high yielding with good yield stability and have a good grain quality and disease package (Table 1). The line M19259 delivers on the market class for a large green shiny mungbean that has a key target region of dryland NSW adaptation. The present benchmark varieties for this region are Opal-AU (NSW has the largest production area) and Jade-AU (the most widely grown variety in NSW) with a new variety release required to possess greater than or equal grain yield, seed size and halo blight resistance to these varieties.
