Fire ant baits, treatments and what’s coming next.

 **Update**

Registrations have been extended and will now close 3pm this Friday 25 September.

The online Industry Briefing will take place  2pm – 3.30pm on Monday 28 September 2020 via Microsoft Teams.

Organisations in the chemical, pest management, nursery and supply industries with an interest in baits or treatments for killing fire ants may be interested in attending.

Senior representatives from the Program will present the Program’s 10-Year Eradication Plan to find, contain and destroy fire ants in South East Queensland, Australia. Speakers will also discuss new initiatives currently underway and outline upcoming fire ant bait needs for the Program and Program stakeholders, and discuss future opportunities to support the program.

About the Program and our needs

The National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program’s main goal is to eradicate fire ants from Australia by 2027. The Program’s 10-Year Eradication Plan provides a comprehensive rolling eradication strategy from west of the infestation to the east over the period of 2017–18 to 2026–27.

Intensive eradication treatment has already been applied to over 160,000 hectares (Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and parts of Ipswich in Queensland) of the 500,000 hectares where fire ants have been found, or are expected to be found. More information on the 10-Year Eradication Plan can be found at www.daf.qld.gov.au/fireants.

As part of our eradication efforts, the Program works to contain spread and suppress fire ant populations to reduce infestation ahead of future eradication treatment, and where nest numbers are causing anxiety for the community. The Program will be conducting pilot projects within the community to encourage self-treatment of fire ants and will be looking for appropriately designed packaging to facilitate easy distribution and application of bait.

In addition, the broader community, local governments and industry are being encouraged to join the fight against fire ants. Anecdotal and research-based feedback is showing the cost, size, labelling and availability of bait is a deterrent to treating fire ants in their backyard or property. The Program is looking to the chemical industry to find solutions to fill this market need. Both residential sized packaging and the bulk supply to industry will be required in the near future.

The Program has also trained commercial pest technicians in the appropriate treatment of fire ants, to give the community and industry an additional option to treat fire ants on properties they own or manage.

Current chemical used by the Program for treatment of fire ants:

  • Fipronil – For direct nest injection (DNI) - This method requires specialist equipment and is labour intensive, but is the most effective treatment for individual fire ant nests and delivers more immediate results.
  • Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) (s-methoprene, pyriproxyfen) – Broad scale bait treatment best used to control fire ants over larger areas, requiring multiple applications every 10-12 weeks between September – June, when fire ants are foraging. IGR is also used in eradication treatments.
  • Toxicant (hydromethylnon, indoxacarb) – Applying a toxicant bait treatment to a fire ant nest generally takes up to 5 weeks for the nest to die.

Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA)

The National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program encourages residents and industry to purchase and use fire ant bait to treat the invasive pest on their own property or work site.

There are several fire ant baits approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and currently available on the market. They have different active ingredient(s) and are suitable for use in different situations.
