Tender Overview

QRP-23-6 Inventory Forecasting Optimisation – EOI Tender Overview

Queensland Rail (QR) is seeking an inventory Material Requirement Planning (MRP) analytical solution to assist Material Planners in making more informed and efficient replenishment decisions. This will lead to better optimised inventory levels across QR. QR currently maintains approximately 15,000 inventory items in SAP across thirty-seven plants. Recent global events and changing economies are creating uncertainty and volatility in many supply chains.

The business problem to be addressed is the suboptimal user functionality of SAP MRP, which requires users to run multiple transactions to assess stock situations for each QR plant, then run additional transactions to review historical usage, open demand, material values, historical lead times and other inputs required to make inventory replenishment decisions. Excel is currently used to analyse historical usage, determine safety stock levels and economic orders quantities. The current process requires users to export data from SAP Material Document List and use pivot tables to display usage by month format. Currently, individual perception and decision making is utilised to enhance the MRP process, leading to potential sub-optimal results with regards to inventory levels and ordering. This process is highly inefficient, prone to data handling errors, relies on subjective decisions by numerous staff and duplicates effort. A system is required to automate this process were possible and provide a consistent and scalable method of analysing inventory replenishment set-points and updating SAP for the revised set-point values.
