Tender Overview

Queensland Rail wishes to advise of an upcoming tender opportunity for project QRP-21-168 Alligator Creek Bridge Pier Replacement works.

This tender is planned to be released to the market via QTenders in March 2023.

Alligator Creek Rail bridge located in Yaamba, North of Rockhampton, at 674.310km on the North Coast Line (NCL). The bridge was constructed in 1911 and is 253m long. The bridge has 19 piers and consists of six x 11 metre prestressed concrete spans, nine x 8.5 metre steel girder spans, and three x 36.5 metre truss spans. Piers 5 to 15 are the original piers from 1911, and Piers 1 to 4 and 16 to 19 were replaced in 1993. The superstructure between Spans 1 and 9 and Spans 13 and 18 was also replaced in 1993. Truss spans 10 to 12 are the original 1911 superstructure and were strengthened in 1993.

In 2018 a bridge inspection confirmed piers 14 and 15 were leaning and a steel propping system was installed to reduce the risk of further movement of the piers. The design of the steel props provided a temporary solution until the leaning piers are rectified. Piers 5 to 9 are of the same design as piers 14 and 15, and all seven piers show extensive cracking with indication of the cracks opening/moving under load.

Further engineering investigation and assessment was undertaken to determine the current condition of the piers and provide recommendations on remediation. The assessment concluded that all seven piers require replacement due to insufficient foundation support and extensive cracking. Currently, there is a speed restriction of 40km/h in place over the bridge and regular survey is being undertaken on the piers to monitor movement.

The piers are suffering from excessive concrete cracking and have poor foundations. Based on the engineering assessment it is recommended that Piers 5 to 9 and piers 14 and 15 are fully replaced to ensure structural integrity and transfer of loads to a suitable stratum with sufficient rock socket length.

This project will deliver works to rectify the defective piers on Alligator Creek Bridge and will address:

  • Risks associated with pier failure and potentially bridge failure.
  • Intensive bridge maintenance that is currently required.
  • Speed restrictions in place impacting on running times.

The major benefits from delivery of the project are:

  • Reduced maintenance interventions and reduced future bridge maintenance requirements.
  • Current speed restriction of 40km/h removed and reduced future potential for Temporary Speed Restrictions (TSRs).
  • Reliable and safe bridge structure supporting improved reliability and service delivery on the NCL.

To be considered for this activity the Principal Contractor must be classified as a Category 1 Contractor prequalified on the Queensland Rail Contractor Safety and Environmental Management (CSEM) register as well as holding current Safely Access the Rail Corridor (SARC), Working in Electrified Territory (WET) and Rail Industry Worker (RIW) certification.

Queensland Rail will be conducting a tender information session to outline specific requirements and expected project outcomes, the date will be confirmed upon tender release
